WEST JEFFERSON — The Lady Greyhounds shut down Ashe County in the first half on the way to a 42-25 win to open the basketball season.

North Surry gave up just seven points in the first half and led 21-7.

Coach Shane Slate said the Hounds came out with solid full-court, man-to-man defense. By the end of the first quarter the Hounds led 12-4.

Guard Morgan Hawks led the team with 10 points, and her younger sister Maggie added eight.

Center Malaya Johnson had nine points, 11 rebounds, five blocks, four assists and two steals in a fine all-around game.

Casey White scored five points, Jordan Badgett and Erin March four each, and Taylor Hill and Abby Andrews one each.

Paige Spell led the Lady Huskies with eight.

Slate said he was pleased with his team including his young contributors, but there are still plenty of areas where they can improve.

North Surry travel to North Wilkes on Tuesday before holding its home opener Friday against Bishop McGuinness.
