ROCKY MOUNT —The Surry Community College Knights men’s golf team stood in second place after opening day of the Fall Region X Golf Championship at Belmont Golf Course.
Knight’s Ryan Wilson shot a 70 and led the individual scorers on the 7,095 yard course.
Sandhills Community College led the competition recording a 290, SCC shot a 306, and Patrick Henry Community College a 313.
Knight’s Head Coach Tom Pendergraft said there were only three teams with enough players eligible for the team competition, though seven squads participated.
“It is one of the longest golf courses we will play and is an extremely difficult course,” said Pendergraft.
Coach Pendergraft said he was “extremely pleased” with Wilson’s first day performance. Sandhill’s Nick Thompson finished second.
Pendergraft said he positioned “new man” Matthew Snow at the four position, who shot a 78. The coach called it the clincher that gave the team the second-place finish.
The coach said he will look to pick up strokes from Knights veteran players during day two. McKinley Johnson is capable of shooting a 70 and below, Kirk Casstevens below 75 and Ryan High in the low 70’s, said Pendergraft.
Pendergraft described Sandhills as the “thorn in his flesh” and said they will have tremendous pressure on them if the Knight’s game picks up to its potential.
Looking ahead, Pendergraft concluded, “Tomorrow’s another day and it is still anybody’s game.”
