PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry High School Army Junior Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) A Team topped the field in a weekend Raiders Challenge held at the school.
The annual challenge includes a physical training (PT) test which included activities such as push-ups, sit-ups, the mile run, and a 5K run. Other events included an obstacle course which included a litter carry, knot tying, a vehicle pull and a rope bridge. A total of 15 teams participated in the event this year. East’s Raiders program involves 24 students who will advance to Nationals.
The event is scored similar to track events where the lowest scores determine overall placement. East’s A team had an overall total of 11 points. The team finished third in PT, first in rope bridge with a time of 1:10, first in knot tying, first in the litter carry with with a time of 4:27, fourth in the 5K and first in the vehicle pull with a time of 18:66.
The Olympic A team was second with 18 points. Olympic was second in PT, fourth on the rope bridge, fourth in knot tying, fourth in the litter carry, second in the 5K with a time of 22:59 and second in the vehicle pull with a time of 19:75.
Carroll County was third with a total of 23 points overall. Carroll was first in PT, third in rope bridge with a time of 1:39, second in knots with 650 points, third in the litter carry with a time of 5:38 and first in the 5K with a time of 21:12. The team was 13th in the vehicle pull.
East Surry High School’s Raiders B team finished fourth with 29 points overall. B team was seventh in PT, second on the rope bridge with a time of 1:32, ninth in knots, second in the litter carry with a 5:06, fifth in 5K going the distance of 24:21 and fourth in the vehicle pull.
East Surry’s Raider C team was ninth overall with 54 points. The group finished 13th in PT, fifth on the rope bridge, third in knots, seventh in the litter carry with a time of 7:35, 14th in the 5K and 12th in the vehicle pull.
Surry Central High School’s Air Force JROTC team finished in 12th place with 62 points. Central was ninth in PT, eighth on rope bridge, seventh in knots, 12th in the litter carry and 5K and 14th in the vehicle pull.
Elkin’s Raiders were 14th overall with 71 points. The team was 14th in PT, 12th in rope bridge, tenth in knot tying, 15th in the litter carry, 13th in the 5K and seventh in the vehicle pull.
East’s JROTC A team finished fifth in the National Raiders challenge last year and East’s B team was twelfth.
