O’Neal leads Husky marching band to second place finish

October 23, 2013

Heading up the Huskies in his debut performance as drum major, Jacob O’Neal led the band to a second-place finish in the 26th Annual Freedom Classic Tournament of Bands at Freedom High School on Saturday in Morganton.

The Huskies were among 22 bands competing in six divisions based on band size. Ashe County competed in the 1A Division along with Polk County High School of Columbus and Unicoi County High School of Erwin, Tenn.

O’Neal stepped up to fill the shoes of Drum Major Kelsey Hayes who was not able to compete because of illness. He answered the call by placing second in the drum major category.

The Huskies also placed second in the percussion and visual ensemble categories. Ashe County placed second overall in the 1A Division and received a rating of “excellent.”

The Husky Vanguard Marching Band will next compete in the 2013 Carolina Classic Band Festival on Saturday, Oct. 26, at East Lincoln High School in Denver.
