The Ashe County Praise Brigade is hosting its third annual Warm Your Hart fundraiser this weekend to raise money which will help provide the elderly winter necessities.
“We started (the Praise Brigade) about three years ago from a dream I had,” said Sarah Goodman, who started the organization. “(The dream) was about starting a little group with girls to do mission work.”
The event is held every year in honor of Stephanie Francis Hart, who dedicated a lot of her time to helping out in the community. She died of a kidney disease.
“Stephanie was the kind of person that everybody who met loved her,” Goodman said. “No matter how sick she was, she was worried about everybody else.”
The event will be taking place at Mt Paddy Church in Jefferson. It will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
This fundraiser, people will be able to enjoy soup, a drink and dessert for a donation of their choice. Raffles will also be taking place during the fundraiser.
“We have jewelry, restaurant gift cards, a handmade quilt, Mary Kay items and much more,” Goodman said.
Goodman said usually the event raises between $1,500 and $2,000. This year they are hoping to raise a higher amount.
The money goes to help cover costs of fuel, medicine and electricity during the cold winter months for the elderly. The Praise Brigade delivers wood to families in need as well during the winter season.
“People can contact us if they know someone who needs help,” Goodman said. “We will try to help take care of it”
The organization does other fundraisers throughout the year to help make a difference in the community. They have supported a family every Christmas, went and delivered items in Kentucky after a tornado struck and works with an area hospice to provide a complete Thanksgiving.
“Please come out and support us and help us make a difference,” Goodman said.
