DOBSON — A star of the long-running and popular television show “Hee Haw” will be in Surry County, lending her voice to a fundraising effort for a local volunteer fire department.

Lulu Roman, who starred on the show from 1969-1992, will be performing at Salem Baptist Church in Dobson on Oct. 19, as part of the inaugural Dobson Rescue Squad Gospel Singing.

In addition to Roman, the event will feature the Mylon Hayes Family, the Bledsoes and Jerusalem Way.

The church, located at 430 Rockford Road in Dobson, will open its doors at 5 p.m., and the performances will start at 6 p.m., according to rescue squad board member and volunteer Jonathan Bledsoe.

Bledsoe said he hopes the community comes out to support the fundraising effort.

“(Roman) has a beautiful voice and a moving testimony,” he said Friday. “We really hope the public comes out to hear her.”

The Oct. 19 event is the first time the rescue squad has held a gospel event as part of its fundraising efforts.

“We’ve been doing a Halloween fundraiser featuring a haunted trail for years, but it’s just so much work and we don’t see much return on our investment, so this year we decided to try something new,” he said.

Money raised from the singing will be used to fund squad operations and help pay for much-needed improvements to their building.

“We were having to put trashcans down to catch water when it rained,” he said. “That’s sad to say, and with all the trucks and expensive equipment in there we had to do something, so we recently had to replace the roof.”

He said he is lucky to have secured a star like Roman for the first-ever gospel fundraiser.

“I sing gospel music and am off somewhere nearly every weekend singing,” he said. “A couple of my friends know her well, and I wanted to find someone to perform that a lot of people would know. When I talked to here she became very excited about coming to help us out.”

Tickets are $10 at the door, and are available by calling Bledsoe at 336-374-8651. More information is available via email at
