The East Surry girls varsity team beat the formerly undefeated 5-0 undefeated North Stokes Vikings in a conference game at home on Wednesday.
The Cards lost 26-24 in game one and won the second by score of 25-16. At an even 1-1 they lost 25-20 in the third game.
After being down by one game, the Cards mastered a comeback and won victories in the last two games of the five-set match. The Cards won the fourth 25-12, and the fifth 17-15.
Head Coach Caleb Gilley said in the fourth game the Cards played really solid and after kicking up a 15-5 score, continued pushing. In the fourth set everything went their way, said Gilley.
The Cards did not finish the first time North Stokes defeated them. This match they overcame by good passing, and “probably the best defense we’ve played all year,” said Gilley.
In the fifth set, the Vikings took the lead 13-12, but the Cards stayed with it and kept battling until they won it, said Gilley.
The Cards moved to 4-2 in conference and are 10-4 overall.
They play Tuesday at home at Mount Airy in another conference game.
Gilley reported stat leaders in the game against the Vikings: Jessie Barr recorded six digs. Sydney Mosley recorded two kills and 24 digs, Gabi Jessup had five kills, two aces and seven blocks. Cheyenne Kota had eight kills, 11 digs, two aces, three blocks and five assists. Crystal Hicinbothem had 13 kills, 2 aces and three blocks. Olivia Sheets recorded one kill, 13 digs and 41 assists. Finally, Kaci Markle recorded 13 kills, 13 digs, 10 aces and six blocks and Jesse Marion 11 kills and six blocks.
Overall, Gilley said, “They have two middles and a right side that hurt us, They are a scrappy and defensive team. They force you into long plays. For the most part, we won that battle,” said Gilley.
