As summer winds down, the American Red Cross is making a last-minute push to ensure adequate blood supplies for the remainder of the season — including drives today and Sunday in Mount Airy.
In addition to helping others, donors have the incentive of possibly winning one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards. That is part of a campaign open to anyone giving blood between Aug. 26 and this coming Monday.
Today’s blood drive is scheduled at Northern Hospital of Surry County from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Another will be held Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church on South Franklin Road from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
While thousands of people answered a call for blood and platelet donations issued by the Red Cross earlier this summer, an urgent need remains for platelets and types O negative, A negative and B negative blood, officials say. All blood types generally are required to ensure a reliable supply for patients.
The summer months can be especially difficult to collect enough blood and platelet donations to keep pace with patient needs, the Red Cross reminds.
Prospective donors can call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or obtain more information.
A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required when checking in at a drive. Individuals who are 17 years of age, 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
High school students and other donors 18 and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.
