August 26, 2013

This year marked the Eighth Annual Ashe County Volunteer Initiative School Supply Drive.

The drive went extremely well this year, according to Glenda Luther, the Ashe County Volunteer Director.

The drive brought in over 2,700 donated items which included a variety of paper, pencils, pens, binders, calculators, crayons, markers, glue, book bags and much more

Luther said monetary donations were wonderful, and that the drivereceived $1,200 this year.

The Ashe County High School and Middle School received $300 each, and every elementary school received $200.

Luther said she extended appreciation to United Chemi-Con, Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church, the Retired School Personnel and Skyline Membership Corporation for donations, the collection sites at all Life Store Bank branches, Fifth Third Bank, First Citizens Bank, Ashe Services for Aging, Ingles Market, Ashe County Public Library, and all of the individuals who helped with and supported the supply drive. A special thanks goes out to the Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church’s Youth Group.

The youth group volunteered Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 to collect the supplies, sort the supplies, separate them to go to each school and deliver the supplies along with a check. Luther said the volunteers are a wonderful group of young people who volunteer in so many capacities within the community. Everyone worked hard and the community was generous to this year’s drive.
