ELKIN — The Lady Eagles opened the tennis season with a 7-2 win over the Lady Elks Wednesday.
Surry Central took five of six singles matches to secure the team win before doubles play began.
“We had some jitters for the first match, but they didn’t last too long,” said Coach Dennis Miller.
Top seed Marlee Wilmoth needed a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Miracle Walters, who finished fourth in Mount Airy’s preseason invitational tournament.
At the second spot, Kennedy Dockery fell to Peyton Nicholson 6-3, 6-3.
Third seed Sommer Chilton defeated Mikayla Dimmette 6-1, 6-0.
Mikalya Cox won the fourth-seed match over Julie Newmark 6-3, 6-0.
Mallory Wilmoth beat Emma Aldridge 6-0, 6-2.
Sixth seed Olivia Fowler topped Karen Blackburn 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles play, Mallory Wilmoth and Chilton lost to Walters/Nicholson 8-5.
Veteran doubles team Dockery and Cox whitewashed Newmark and Aldridge 8-0.
Fowler and Madison White won over Blackburn and Gigi Kakouras 8-2.
The Eagles originally were slated to open against Wilkes Central on Monday, but were rained out. Miller said that match has not been rescheduled yet, and there may not be a chance to squeeze it in if the weather creates any more cancellations.
Next up for the Eagles (1-0) is a home match with East Surry (2-0) on Monday.
