GREENSBORO — Just before the official volleyball season is set to begin, local high school varsity volleyball teams, East Surry and North Surry, pounded in a few more practice opportunities on Friday.
Twenty-four varsity high school teams and 18 junior varsity competed at the Greensboro Sportsplex in an exhibition scrimmage. The teams did not keep score but competed in an informal format using a 30-minute clock.
Cardinals Head Volleyball Coach Caleb Gilley said it proved to be a “huge benefit” because he had a chance to look at the different combinations of players’ strengths and positions before Monday’s home opener. Cardinal setter Olivia Sheets is expected to be out two weeks due to illness, so the extra practice came at a good time, said Gilley.
The Cardinals are scheduled to play Elkin away at 5 p.m. on Monday.
North Surry Varsity Head Volleyball Coach Shane Slate said the scrimmage gave him a chance to see where the Greyhounds team is after its first week of practice. Slate also said it provided a means to see how things are setting up for the season.
“We are just trying to keep up the work and do our best,” said Slate.
The Greyhounds’ home opener is against Watauga on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
