East Surry broke a scoreless tie midway through the first half and went on to defeat North Surry 3-0 in Wednesday’s soccer action.
Asked how his Lady Cardinals broke through the Greyhounds’ defense, coach Bill Hart said, “Persistence. We just kept plugging away. We tried to keep pressure on North Surry’s back line. We tried to keep them pinned in.
Hart told the East midfielders to be more aggressive and feed the balls back into North territory.
Just inside the 50-yard line, the Cards took a foul and Laura Ruiz sent a free kick over the heads of the North defenders.
Mikayla Custer trapped the ball against her body, then booted it into the left corner of the goal before the defenders could get back to assist the keeper.
With about 15 minutes to go in the first half, defender Anna Simmons sent a pass up the right side. Mary Jo Lowe streaked past the defenders to reach the ball first and sent a low screamer into the net out of the reach of North keeper Maggie Taylor.
The score would stay 2-0 through halftime.
In the second half, Ruiz got her second assist of the game, feeding Eylissa Jones for the last goal.
Both teams came into the match with identical 1-4 records.
While glad that his team won its second game, Hart said the team will have to be hydrated and ready to go again this evening as the Cards host North Stokes in Northwest Conference play.
This will be the third game in as many nights, which will test the players’ legs, he pointed out.
