WALKERTOWN — Mount Airy posted its second-consecutive shutout with a 9-0 victory against Walkertown in Northwest 1A Conference tennis on Thursday.
The Bears improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Wolfpack fell to 3-6.
The Wolfpack had only four players available for the match. The Granite Bears earned the first two team points with defaults at No. 5 (Logan Harris) and No. 6 (Harrison Morris).
Seniors Jack Marion and Justin Leonard added decisive two-set wins. Brandon McGuire was broken at 4-4, was unable to earn a break, and dropped the first set. He went up 3-0 in the second set and finished 6-2. In the third-set tiebreaker, McGuire rallied from 1-5 to win 10-6.
Hunt Harrison was broken on opening serve and trailed 0-3. He rallied to 2-3 and took a 5-4 lead. He was broken on serve at 5-4 and 6-5. In the tiebreaker, he trailed 1-4, took the lead at 6-5 and won 8-6. He was broken on serve to open the second set and trailed a break before taking the lead at 4-3. At 6-5, he earned a break to win the set and the match,
Mount Airy won a default at No. 3 doubles. Harrison-Gentry Williamson earned a sweep at No. 2. Leonard-Marion completed the team shutout with an 8-4 victory.
Mount Airy hosts Atkins on Friday.
