Mount Airy would use a big first quarter to fight of a tough Union Pines team 68-51 in the first day of the Granite City Classic Monday night.
Mount Airy came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. The Granite Bears used their up-tempo offense to score 23 points in the first quarter, led by senior Robbie Rives who scored 11 of his game-high 21 points. Mount Airy led 23-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Mount Airy head coach Kevin Spainhour said his teams start was the catalyst for the win.
It was key for us, Spainhour said. It gave us a little cushion to work with. Also, Rives was terrific tonight, especially in the first.
In the second quarter the Bears would fall off their first quarter pace as Union Pines would make a 7-2 run to end the first half to cut into the Bears lead, 33-22.
In the third quarter the Granite Bears would outscore the Vikings 15-6 to extend their lead to 49-24 entering the fourth.
However, Union Pines would make it interesting in the fourth, using a 9-2 run to cut the Bears led down to 13 points with just over four minutes remaining but the Vikings wouldnt get any closer as Rives and Dillion Bobbit combined to make eight free-throws down the stretch to close out the win.
Spainhour said his team may have been affected by the Christmas down time.
We were very rusty tonight, he said. We had a full week off and have only practiced two days since school let out, but I give Union Pines a lot of credit. They are a good basketball team and its good to get a W over a team like that.
Along with Rives, junior Wade Moody also scored in double figures for the Granite Bears with 12 points
Johnathon Toomer led Union Pines with 17 points, followed by Eric Smith with 9 points.
Mount Airy will take on Patrick County tomorrow in the second day of the Granite City Classic, while Union Pines will take on East Surry.
