More time needed for public to consider plan
by By John Peters
Normally, we don’t comment on items submitted by someone writing a letter to the editor, and when we do, we seldom do so on the same day the letter runs.
We felt the need to make an exception today, with local resident John Pritchard’s letter appearing on this page. In his letter, Pritchard makes the case that the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners should delay voting on a state Department of Transportation study for pedestrian walkways and bikeways in the city.
Our call is not disagreement with anything in the study, nor do we necessarily disagree. We believe the vote should be delayed because it is to come after giving the public a chance to view and comment on the proposal. However, as Pritchard noted, the 66-page proposal was not available for anyone in the city, other than commissioners and city staff, to view until Tuesday.
That means any city resident who had an interest in studying the plan and commenting has little more than 48 hours to read through the proposal and formulate an opinion. Given the fact that most people work, have families and other commitments, we don’t think this is a reasonable request or expectation.
Whichever way the commissioners opt to go on the study, we hope they allow a little more time for the city residents to take part in the discussion.
