To the Editor,

You should be ashamed. This “letter to the editor” (Aug. 8 letter by Gary Tilley) is not a letter to the editor. It is an op-ed written by a professional, or near professional political operative, for the Republican party. As such you should have identified this piece as such. Your readers have a right to know.

For a political operative, his slurs and half-truths are standard. We expect more from private citizens.

He says he checks his sources. He doesn’t state that the Civitas he mentions is a right wing think tank, politically active force, funded primarily by Art Pope, ultra conservative Republican, currently the state budget manager. He implies that the news media he mentions are in the same category, which they are not. These news sources may lean left, but a more fair list of like sources on the right would be the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Times, Forbes.

The news sources he lists, Newsmax and Townhall, are so obviously right-wing the previous listed news sources, along with cable news, and the network news, do not mention them or use them as sources, except in derision. The Sowell he mentions substitutes for Rush Limbaugh on occasion, which tells you what his views are. I know about him only because some of my far-right friends quote him on occasion. You will note he is very rarely mentioned in your paper, or the papers listed above. This is because he is so out of the mainstream. My point is that he is comparing apples and oranges.

I do agree with his criticism of D. G. Martin, although he does not mention that Mr. Martin has since apologized. He does not mention that the opinion area of this paper is often filled by conservative columnists. Michael Reagan, Mr. Sportsdurst, and several others. Mr. Joyce usually writes in a conservative vein also. Conservatives are well represented in your paper.

I also note that after bragging on his party, (he is Chair., Surry County Republican Party, after all) he does not offer any plan to offer any kind of healthcare to the many North Carolinians without health care, makes no mention of the federal grant his party turned down, nor apologized to the 500,000 North Carolinians that would have covered with Medicaid. Tax cuts on the wealthy resulting in cuts to unemployment insurance, food stamp, loss of public school teachers and aides, making it harder for all of us to vote, etc. I could go on.

It would be truly amazing if his view was anything other than the standard party line, which should be stated on the op-ed page.

I expect you will lack the courage to print this letter, but at least I want you to know how at least one reader feels. You, sir, lack integrity!

Fred Norman
